Spills are inevitable. At one point or another, a mess is going to happen. Not only are these stains unsightly, but they can even be brought into your home through footprint tracks. It is important to clean up the stain to keep your property looking in tip-top shape.

Asphalt is impermeable, meaning it is less porous than other materials like concrete. This works in your favor because asphalt naturally has the ability to break up stains over time.

Here are some ways to remove oil stains from your asphalt driveway.

Pressure Washing:

You can help the process move along quicker by using a pressure washer. By applying force, you are breaking up the connection of the asphalt and the stain. But be cautious, too much pressure can break up the asphalt too. It is recommended to pressure wash at around 3,000 psi to effectively get rid of the stain.

Green Degreaser:

Another way to remove an oil stain is to apply a green degreaser. These are non-toxic chemicals that still get the job done. Green degreasers contain alcohol, ethoxylate and even citrus. However, to see results, you will have to vigorously scrub the impacted area.

Cat Litter:

Yes, you read that right. Cat litter can be used to absorb your fresh oil stain because of its key ingredient, granular clay. So, only cat litter that contains clay will work. It is a common household item that can work in a pinch!
